The humans behind the dogs
My name is Marie-Claude and I'm the main person behind Juhyosou. Growing up, I always loved animals and was lucky to own multiples. Like all little 9 years old girls, I wanted to become a vet! I was dreaming, looking at all the dogs and cats breeds in books, trying to learn all the breeds names, what they were used for, their temperaments so that one day I could do my dream job.
This is where I learned about the Shiba Inu at first and totally felt in love with these little foxes. They were totally different from the dogs I've grown up with (Labradors, Chihuahuas, German Shepherds).
For a moment, I've quit that passion for dogs to concentrate on another: Traditional and digital Arts. I went to college in Visual Arts, then got a Bachelor Degree in 3D creations and numerical designs for video games. After a couple of years, I saw it was not my place to be. Nonetheless, I've learned a lot during those years and apply what I've learned to my day to day life.
My love for dogs was rekindled by Dio's arrival, my first ever shiba inu that I've dream for so long! I had the chance to have lovely mentors that allowed me to fully commit on learning about the breed, the dog show world and gave me my chance. These people and this dog literally changed my life and I will be forever grateful.
Samuel, my partner, is the second face behind Juhyosou! While he doesn't take part in the gestion, pedigree analysis and dog choosing or matching part of the program, he takes a lot of care for our dogs! He followed me and my dream for this breed and has fallen in love as well.
You might see him often during trials, meet the breeds or when you come visit us! He is a knowledgeable breed ambassador, love to educate the public about the shiba and what it means to have a primitive breed. He is also always so proud to talk about our dogs, their quirkiness and what they do!
He participate to a lot of trials with one of our retired dog, Megumi, who he grew a really special bond with. His favorite dog sport is Barn Hunt!
Program Goals
Our mentality is pretty simple: quality over quantity. We want to have dogs that are mentally and structurally sound.
Everyone has their own vision of what is ethical in the dog world. To us, we think ethical breeding is made with the goal of preserving and improving the health a breed so that people can enjoy them as well in hundreds of years. A good breeder should invest itself in the public education about the breed, respect the limits of their dogs, care, health tests and title their dogs, be transparent about its practices and the most important one: make sure they have the best life possible.
To achieve this, we are a club member of the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC), the Shiba Inu Club of Canada (SIC), the NIPPO of North America Club (NNA) and NIPPO (Nihonken Hozonkai). We are active in breed groups, social media and communicate with multiple other breeders. Only together, we can work on preserving this lovely breed.
We make sure our dogs come from reputable lines so we have as much information as possible about the heath, structure and temperament of the dogs behind ours.
Health and socialisation program
We do all the health tests required by the OFA and even more. While we agree of the importance of the tests OFA is requesting, per experience in the breed, we see that there is a lot more issues that we need to keep an eye on if we don't want them to become a generalized problem later on. That's why we also test for heart, elbows and some neurological diseases. We also add the dentition information on OFA for archive reasons, since the breed as a teeth disqualifications.
Since the shiba is a primitive breed, socialisation is incredibly important and needs to be taken seriously to have sound temperaments for the families they live with. A poorly socialised shiba can develop anxiety and behavioral issues. We follow the Puppy Culture regiment, along with ENS and do the Avidog's evaluation before they leave for their families.
We strongly advise the families to continue the socialisation of their dogs and take puppy and obedience classes that are based in positive reinforcement. All so the dogs can live a long and fulfilling life with their owner.
Versatility
The shiba inu is an incredible breed that can do so much more than what people think! People often qualify them as stubborn, but we think they can be really drivy and good sporting companions in the good hand!
We title our dogs both in conformation and in sports, so we can have an external and neutral view on our dogs.
We have tried things like shows, barn hunt, sprinter, scent detection, obedience, tricks, fitness, frisbee, dock diving, agility! We love to try new things with our dogs and see what their preferences are.

Our door is always open if people want to start a new sport and need advice! We love to help people that show interest in doing a new activity and build a stronger relationship with their dogs!
